NEW YORK GLOVERS READY FOR CHICAGO

Two teams of highly-tentioned battlers - mightiest mittmen from both sides of the Mississippi - will climax the stirring ' 39 Golden Gloves campaign when they clash in 16 sparkling championship tussles in the annual East vs. West classic at Chicago Stadium Wednesday night.  The colorful meeting of the nation's most famous squads marks the end of a grueling three-month grind, with winners unanimously acclaimed undisputed Golden Gloves champions of America.

William Speary, New York's Golden Gloves bantamweight champion, will seek his third intercity title in tonight's battles with the Chicago team in the Stadium.  He is the only man on either squad with two crowns to his credit.

"We're ready-and we'll win."  That was the open letter-to their families, their sweetheart, and their pals-that New York's Golden Glove horde asked us to send back home as they await the opening gong in the 1939 InterCity Golden Gloves title bouts with the pride of the West tonight.  Radiating pep and enthusiasm and trained to a razor's edge, our small army of leather pushers practically swaggered as they promised to become the first New York's team ever to whip Chicago on its own battleground in the stadium.

West Glovers Lead; Third Title for Speary

Chicago, March 29. --As closely matched as a pair of book ends, the New York and Chicago Golden Gloves teams completed the first seven bouts of their annual amateur fistic warfare with New York leading, 4-3, before near-sellout crowd of about 20,000 at the Stadium last night.

William Speary, New York, 118 pound champion for Philadelphia (black trunks), had a major task in beating Chester Ellis, Chicago's champion. Speary won the decision.
