Speary Bout to Top Great Card
Number of New Faces on Amateur Fistic Program at Mealey's Monday Night
Jan. 1940 |
A card of amateur boxing bouts that promises to hit a new high for thrillers, is on tap at Mealey's auditorium on Monday evening and the sponsors, The Little Stick AA by bringing a number of new faces here. The bouts are A.A.U. sanctioned and will be state commissioned supervise.
In the feature bout Billy Speary, national A.A.U. champion, will try to wipe the last bloch off his slate before he turns professional in Scranton on Feb. 5. He will make the attempt by trying to reverse the decision Hubert Samuels, of Philadelphia, gained over him in a Philly ballpark last summer. Hubert not only gained the nod, but he had the champion sprawled all over the canvas for a nine count.
Among the new faces to be introduced all or Hubert Morris, Philly featherweight; Harrison Rivers, welterweights and Elton Evans who also hail from Philadelphia. Evans knocked out John Henry Lewson, of Bloomfield, Virginia, and the other two come equally well recommended. Evans will clash with the slashing Charles Sanza, of Pottsville, River's with Steve Yuhaas, the crashing Minersville portsider, while Morris takes on Billy Sager, of Wilkes-Barre.
Jimmy Fallabel and Phil Donim, Hazelton and Wop Rhodes, Schuylkill Haven, are among the others who have not showed here before.
Among the popular boxers who are well-known and who will compete are Fred Morris and Donnie Miller, Reading; Clarence Hess from the same town, Joe Freen, Pottsville; George Haldeman, Hokendauqua; Tom Swaveley, Emmaus and others.
Tickets are now selling and indications are that by Monday night the paste boards will be scarce, even though the management has rearrange the seats, so as to accommodate more patrons.
