PHILADELPHIA 112-POUNDER IS AMONG THOSE GAINING SEMI-FINALS IN RING MEET

72 STILL IN THE RUNNING

PLENTY OF ACTION AT HIPPODROME

Billy Speary of Philadelphia, one of the best 112-pounders seen during three hectic sessions of the Golden Gloves tournament, emerged as a semi-finalist at the close of the quarter-finals at the Hippodrome last night.

The 72 survivors of the 317 entrants will compete in the semi-finals February 28 at Ridgewood and March 1 at the Hippodrome.  The survivors of that round will meet in the finals at Madison Square Garden, March 7.  The tournament is being conducted by The Daily News Welfare Association.

Speary is one of the best of the great array of amateurs who kept two rings surging with action yesterday.  A clever, cool boxer with an educated left and a sharp right cross, he knocked out Tony Palamara of Trinity in the first round.  A hard right to the body dropped Palamara for short count, and a sharp right cross to the jaw dropped him for the full count.

GLOVERS BROADCAST
- "Where I come from you have to know how to fight … or else," declared Bill Speary, Philly Golden Glover, at WMCA as announcer Dick Fishell and other victorious Glovers looked on. Bill was the only defending champ to survive Monday's finals. You'll note that they are no bumps or bandages on these champs. They all came out in as good a condition as they went in.
